The head of a Muslim human rights organization has been detained on suspicion of collaboration with Hizb ut-Tahrir.

On May 29, the head of the Regional Human Rights Center "Nova", Marcel Gimaliev, born in 1981, was detained in Kazan. He was summoned to the Republican Department of the FSB for interrogation as an accused in a criminal case of involvement in the Hizb ut-Tahrir organization. At the end of the interrogation, his detention was issued on suspicion of involvement in a banned organization (Article 282-2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), assistance in terrorist activities (Article 205-1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and preparation for actions aimed at forcibly changing the constitutional order of the Russian Federation (Article 30 part 1, article 278 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation).

On May 22, six unknown men in civilian clothes searched the house of M. Gimaliev in the absence of the owner. During the interrogation of M. Gimaliev, it turned out that they were FSB officers.

The Nova Center was founded in 2005 to protect the rights of Muslims. Relatives of those detained in the Hizb ut-Tahrir case turned to M. Gimaliev for help.

“Thus, Marcel knew exactly what was charged by the defendants in the criminal case in which he was summoned to the FSB as a suspect - before going for interrogation, he informed the Civic Assistance Committee, the Memorial Human Rights Center and in HumanRightsWatch. And yet, the young man did not make any attempts to escape, which can only be explained by his confidence in his innocence," the Civic Assistance Committee said in a press . release
