Deputy Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation published statistics on extremist crimes in the Southern Federal District

On June 21, 2007, in Rostov-on-Don, at a coordinating meeting of the heads of law enforcement agencies of the Southern Federal District (SFD) on combating extremism, terrorism and crimes in the field of interethnic relations, Deputy Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Ivan Sydoruk announced the statistics of extremist crimes in the district.

According to I. Sydoruk, in 2006, 23 criminal cases of this category were in the production of the prosecutor's offices of the Southern Federal District. During the first 5 months of 2007 another 6 such cases were initiated. In 2006, the district courts handed down 11 guilty verdicts in cases of extremist crimes. In the 1st quarter of this year - already 5.

The Deputy Prosecutor General also reported that in 2006 the district prosecutors issued 21 warnings about the inadmissibility of violating the law "On counteracting extremist activity", issued 4 warnings and made over 100 submissions.

Since law enforcement agencies are characterized by a broad interpretation of the concept of "extremism", the above statistics probably included not only crimes motivated by ethnic hatred, but also those related to terrorism, etc.
