Hate speech was discussed in Izhevsk

On November 9, 2007, a discussion took place in Izhevsk on the topic "Professional ethics of a journalist during the period of election campaigns." The discussion was organized by the Hot Spot Foundation (Izhevsk) with the participation of the Regional Press Institute (St. Petersburg), the Center for the Development of Democracy and Human Rights, the SOVA Center and the Center for Journalism in Extreme Situations (all in Moscow).

The discussion was attended by Anna Sharogradskaya (IRP), Mikhail Melnikov (CEJ), Galina Kozhevnikova (SOVA), representatives of the Ministry of National Policy of Udmurtia, the republican prosecutor's office, the media, public organizations, national communities.

In particular, Deputy Minister for National Policy Larisa Buranova spoke about the manifestations of hate speech in the Udmurt media (as an example, in particular, the article "On Thin Ice" was cited, for which one of the newspapers received a warning from the prosecutor's office), as well as methods to counter it. . For example, a special public expert council has been set up under the ministry to help the ministry evaluate publications of various kinds.

Ombudsman for Children's Rights in Udmurtia Olga Pishkova drew the attention of the discussion participants to the low legal literacy of people, as well as the lack of ideas about human rights in society in general.

The participants of the discussion discussed the problem of the growth of aggression in the media during the election campaigns, the relationship between freedom of speech and linguistic aggression and other problems related to conflict situations in the media.

The day before, on November 8, at the journalism faculty of the Udmurt State University, a seminar "Coverage of the conflict in the media" was held for students and active journalists.
