First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev, speaking at a gala evening dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the restoration of the patriarchate, promised that the state would continue to provide assistance to the Russian Orthodox Church in the restoration of churches. In 2007, more than 1.5 billion rubles were allocated for these purposes, and from 2008 to 2010 it is planned to allocate more than 6 billion rubles.
"We hope this will facilitate the solution of the common task of preserving the cultural heritage," D. Medvedev said.
According to the first vice-premier, about 4,000 religious buildings and structures have already been handed over to Orthodox organizations, "mostly for unlimited and gratuitous use."
