A public discussion “Youth extremist movements: an imaginary threat or a real danger?” was held in Perm.

On December 26, 2007, Perm State Pedagogical University hosted a public discussion on the topic "Youth extremist movements: imaginary threat or real danger?", organized on the initiative of the Youth "Memorial" and the public laboratory "Civic values ​​in education".

The discussion was attended by teachers and students of the Faculty of History of the University. The participants in the discussion discussed the attitude of Russian society towards youth extremist movements and extremism in general, as well as the effectiveness of the state policy to counter extremism.

The presentations prepared and presented by students of the main "left" and "right" radical movements in Russia, as well as the materials of sociological surveys of Russians in recent years, demonstrated the lack of analytical information on the problem of youth extremism, as well as the extreme bias of information disseminated in the media on this topic.

Analyzing the state policy of countering extremism, the participants in the discussion emphasized that it is extremely inconsistent and ineffective. Examples were given of the selective application of the law "On Counteracting Extremist Activities". In particular, the absence of any sanctions against the actions of Nashi activists and, at the same time, their excessive application against members of the NBP (National Bolshevik Party). The formality of many initiatives announced by the state in the field of developing tolerance in Russian society, on the one hand, and the absence of strict measures to counter acts of violence on interethnic grounds, on the other, were pointed out.
