On January 25, 2008, the first court session was held in Ivanovo in the case of an attack by a group of young people on the rabbi of the local synagogue, Zvi Hershovich, the head of the Ivanovo Jewish community, Canadian citizen Erwin Kirshtein, and several members of the community.
Recall that the criminal case under paragraph "a" part 2 of Art. 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (incitement of ethnic hatred or enmity with the use of violence or with the threat of its use) on the fact of an attack on members of the Jewish community was sent to court in December 2007. The main defendant in the attack on the rabbi and those accompanying him, Sergei Novikov, said that he considers himself a "Rodover".
The investigation established that the attackers shouted anti-Semitic slogans and threatened to kill members of the Jewish community. Sergei Novikov brandished a knife and fired a poisonous substance from the Udar self-defense device several times towards the victims.
