March 2008. Results of the month

In March 2008, at least 31 attacks were carried out in Russia, motivated by the neo-Nazi and racist attitudes of the attackers, as a result of which at least 40 people were injured, 10 of whom died. In total, since the beginning of 2008, at least 39 people have died and at least 112 people have been injured in 14 regions of Russia.

The main center of neo-Nazi violence is Moscow - 24 killed and at least 63 wounded, including in March - 5 killed and 20 wounded.

Obviously, due to the large number of fatal attacks, information about less tragic incidents simply remains unknown. This, in particular, is evidenced by the number of victims in St. Petersburg, the second largest center of racist violence, where 7 people are known to have been killed and only 4 injured since the beginning of the year. It is unlikely that this ratio reflects the real situation in the city.

In March 2008, Russian courts issued at least four convictions for violent racist crimes - in Moscow, Ivanovo, Omsk and Yaroslavl. In total, since the beginning of the year, 6 sentences for racist violence against 11 people have been handed down.

Two people were convicted for propaganda (distribution of xenophobic leaflets) in March - in Ulan-Ude and Kursk. In both cases, the convicts received suspended sentences without additional penalties.

In mid-March, the federal list of extremist materials was updated for the next (sixth) time, which, as of the end of March, includes 101 titles of books, brochures, musical works, and films).

In addition, in March, at least 4 more court decisions were issued on the recognition of a number of materials as extremist.
