On April 10, 2008, a round table "Youth against nationalism" was held in Sakhalin within the framework of the political club "For constructive cooperation". The event was attended by representatives of national diasporas, public organizations, students.
According to Yakov Tomilko, senior detective for especially important cases of the Department of Economic Crimes of the Internal Affairs Directorate of the Sakhalin Region, “extremism has always existed since the formation of the state. There are several types of extremism: social, political, youth, and it is often impossible to draw a line between them.”
"Youth extremism is developing especially widely on the territory of the Russian Federation. It is represented by skinhead groups. Youth extremism does not have a clear ideology. The most acute problem of youth extremism is in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod," he said.
Y.Tomilko noted that in the last 3-5 years, swastikas have appeared on buildings in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk and Korsakov . On these facts, several criminal cases were initiated, members of one of the Sakhalin skin groups will be held accountable.
The participants of the event expressed their opinion on the causes of extremism and suggested ways to solve the problem. "Manifestations of extremism, in particular, the swastika on the walls, are the result of lack of culture and lack of education among young people," the participants of the round table came to this conclusion.
