The Prosecutor's Office of St. Petersburg on nationalist crimes committed since the beginning of the year

On April 14, 2008, the St. Petersburg City Prosecutor's Office provided official statistics on nationalist crimes committed since the beginning of 2008.

Since the beginning of the year, 16 crimes have been registered in which law enforcement agencies suspect a racist component. Eight of these crimes were committed against people from Uzbekistan, two against citizens of Kyrgyzstan, two against citizens of Azerbaijan, two against Russians of non-Slavic appearance, and one against a citizen of Ghana . As a result, nine people died.

The prosecutor's office notes that "procedurally, a national motive was noted only in one case" (probably referring to the attack of Nazi skinheads on an African student and graduate students from Mongolia) - a criminal case was initiated against him under Art. 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (incitement of national hatred). All other cases are classified under articles 105 (murder), 111 (deliberate infliction of grievous bodily harm) and 213 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (hooliganism).
