In May 2008, at least 13 attacks were recorded, resulting in at least 4 deaths and at least 14 injuries. We note a sharp decrease in the activity of Nazi skinheads compared to previous months . However, we emphasize again that, most likely, we are talking about the fact that such attacks do not get into the media for various reasons.
In May, incidents occurred in Moscow (4 killed and 4 wounded), Bryansk, Kaliningrad, Novokuznetsk, Omsk, Tula.
In total, during the 5 months of 2008, at least 234 people suffered from such attacks, 57 of whom died. Incidents were registered in 21 regions of Russia. During the same period in 2007, 279 people were injured, 39 of whom died.
The main centers of violence continue to be Moscow (35 killed and 89 wounded) and St. Petersburg (11 killed and 18 wounded).
In May, at least 5 convictions were handed down against 19 people for violent crimes, in which the motive of hatred was recognized. Courts in Moscow, the Moscow region, Krasnodar, St. Petersburg and the Penza region ended with such verdicts.
The most resonant, of course, was the verdict handed down to eight defendants in the explosion at the Cherkizovsky market, which, we recall, killed 13 and injured at least 53 people. 4 of the eight defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment, the rest received terms from 2 to 20 years in prison.
In total, since the beginning of 2008, at least 12 sentences were handed down for violent crimes classified as hate crimes in 11 regions of the country.
In May 2008, at least 4 guilty verdicts were issued in cases related to hate propaganda (in Voronezh, Lipetsk, Dagestan and St. Petersburg) against 4 people. The most significant among them was the sentence to the leader of the National Socialist Society, Dmitry Rumyantsev, who received a suspended sentence for speaking at a rally held in 2007 in Voronezh.
Separately, we note the verdict passed on May 26 to six members of the Kazan RNE, who were sentenced to 4 to 7 years. Moreover, in the extensive accusation (in total, the accused were charged with up to 8 articles of the Criminal Code) featured Art. 282.2 - participation in a community recognized by a court as extremist. This is the first sentence in the practice of Russian legal proceedings that was not passed against members of the Hizb-ut-Tahrir group.
continues to be actively replenished The Federal List of Extremist Materials . By the end of May 2008, it already included 141 items of materials recognized by the courts as extremist. At the same time, in several dozen cases, the list does not contain indications of the output data of these materials, which does not allow them to be identified.
