Arson of a synagogue in the Nizhny Novgorod region

On the night of June 1, 2008, in Dzerzhinsk, Nizhny Novgorod Region, unknown vandals wrote obscene inscriptions “offending the national feelings of the Jews” on the wall near the porch of the local synagogue and tried to set fire to the premises by throwing a bottle of flammable liquid through the window.

The synagogue is located on the second floor of a four-storey stone residential building. The media reported that "unknown people apparently tried to throw a bottle with the remains of a flammable liquid into the room, but could not break the glass. At the same time, part of the liquid spilled onto the window frame and caught fire. "

Inscriptions similar to the inscriptions on the synagogue were also found on the territory of the nearby municipal kindergarten, in the courtyard of which children from the Jewish kindergarten walk.

Fortunately, no one was hurt. The Dzerzhinsky Department of Internal Affairs is conducting an inspection, the results of which may lead to a criminal case.

Synagogue rabbi Pinkhas Klimash does not rule out that what happened may be somehow connected with the desecration of graves at Jewish cemeteries in May 2008 in Nizhny Novgorod.
