On June 5, 2008, in the city of Volzhsky (Volgograd region), in the Gashtet cafe, two short-haired young men (appearing to be about 25 years old) attacked 40-year-old Oleg Polonsky.
Young people, seeing O. Polonsky's Magendovid (Star of David) on a key chain, turned to him with the question "Are you a Jew?" Having received an affirmative answer, they severely beat the man.
Polonsky was hospitalized. He has a broken nose and a cut lip. The employees of the cafe did not call the police or an ambulance.
The head of the local Jewish community appealed to the mayor of the city with a request to take the investigation of the crime under his control.
The victim also noted that swastikas are often found on the walls of houses in Volzhsky. "The janitors do not have time to paint over the swastika and various xenophobic signs on the facades of buildings ," Polonsky said.
