On June 24, 2008, an interregional meeting on the problems of harmonization of national relations, prevention of interethnic conflicts and extremism was opened in the Republican Parliament of Karelia. The two-day meeting was organized by the Ministry of National Policy and Relations with Religious Associations of Karelia together with the regional public association "Commonwealth of Peoples of Karelia". The event is attended by representatives of state authorities, local self-government, law enforcement agencies and non-governmental organizations of the republic, the Ministry of Regional Development of the Russian Federation, the governments of the Moscow Region, the Vologda Region and St. Petersburg.
Speaking at the opening of the meeting, Karelian Deputy Prime Minister Vanda Patenko announced that the authorities of Karelia are going to pursue in the region "a policy aimed at maintaining interethnic peace in the republic."
According to Wanda Patenko, "Karelia maintains a calm interethnic situation, despite" some difficulties in the recent past. on the interaction in the national and cultural development of peoples and ethnic communities living in the region.
