A trial is underway in Samara to recognize a brochure about Navruz as extremist material

On July 15, 2008, the Samara District Court began considering the claim of the Samara District Prosecutor to recognize the brochure "Navruz Holiday and Islamic Doctrine" as extremist material, to prohibit its distribution, as well as its production or storage for distribution purposes.

According to lawyer Rustem Valiullin, the prosecutor was not ready for the process and could not answer questions.

The court granted the prosecutor's request to appoint a religious expert, refusing Valiullin's request to include a linguist in the commission, since the questions posed to the religious expert, according to the lawyer, do not fall within his competence.

In addition, the FSB department for the Samara region is making attempts to initiate a criminal case under Art. 280 (public calls for extremist activity) and 282 (inciting hatred or enmity) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation against the imam of the historical mosque of Samara A.A. Kanyukaev and muezzin A.G. Sarvarov.
