July 2008. Results of the month.

In July 2008, at least 11 racist attacks were recorded in Russia, resulting in the death of at least one person and at least 15 others were injured. All of these attacks took place in the Moscow and St. Petersburg regions, which continue to be the main hotbeds of violence.

Since the beginning of the year, at least 276 people have suffered as a result of racist and neo-Nazi attacks in 26 regions of Russia, 60 of whom have died.

As before, the main risk group are people from Central Asia (34 killed, 76 injured).

So far, we are not aware of convictions for violent crimes in which a racist motive would have been found in July. In total, since the beginning of the year, 14 such sentences against 44 people have been issued in 12 regions of Russia.

The beginning of the trial of two groups of Nazi skinheads, which accounted for from one and a half to several dozen violent criminal episodes, caused a great resonance. We are talking about the "Kalinichenko group" (the trial began on July 21) and the "Ryno group" (the trial began on July 24). Both trials will be held behind closed doors, because most of the accused are either minors or were underage at the time of the attacks .

In July 2008, 4 guilty verdicts were handed down against five hate propagandists (in Bryansk, Rostov, Krasnodar - under Article 282 of the Criminal Code and in the Vologda Oblast - under Article 280). In total, since the beginning of the year, 33 people have been convicted of hate propaganda in 24 trials.

Over the past month, a large number of court decisions were made on the recognition of materials as extremist (we consider some of these decisions illegal). In the same period, information was made public about a number of decisions made earlier. So, for example, about three dozen materials were recognized as extremist only at the suits of the prosecutor's offices of St. Petersburg.

However, due to the reorganization of Rosregistration and the Ministry of Justice, the federal list of extremist materials is currently not replenished and still includes 151 items (only in early August, the official list was updated and began to include 219 items).
