Masliat (Islamic arbitration) courts have been declared illegal in Dagestan. The prosecutor's office issued an order revoking the right of the chairman of the council of a mosque in the city of Dagestanskiye Ogni to organize such courts. This regulation applies to other cities of the republic.
The Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Dagestan noted that the Masliat courts do not replace the secular court. In conflict situations, the parties turn to religious leaders, elders, respected people with a request to help resolve the dispute without the intervention of law enforcement agencies.
