On the night of July 7, three unknown people attacked the house of Mufti of Kalmykia Sultanakhmed Karalayev, Interfax reports . Three men in masks and camouflage uniforms burst into the room, where only the mufti's wife was at that moment, and began to beat her. According to Shafig Pshikhachev, plenipotentiary of the Coordinating Center for Muslims of the North Caucasus in Moscow, when the woman asked what they needed, the attackers replied: "Your husband greatly interferes with our work."
The Coordinating Center of the Muslims of the North Caucasus, represented by its chairman Ismail Berdiev, strongly condemned the attack on the house of the Kalmyk mufti and the attempt on the life of his wife.
"We perceive this action as an ongoing attempt to intimidate the religious leaders of the Muslims of the North Caucasus and ask the leadership of Kalmykia to investigate this egregious act and make efforts to ensure the safety of the mufti," I. Berdiyev said in a statement.
I.Berdiev also appealed to the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation with a request to take control of the investigation of this case.
