M. Murtazin opposed the inclusion of the educational field “Spiritual and moral culture” in the school standard

Deputy Chairman of the Council of Muftis of Russia, Rector of the Moscow Islamic University Marat Murtazin opposed the inclusion of the educational field “Spiritual and moral culture” proposed by the Russian Orthodox Church in the school standard.

“The concept of introducing this area, presented by the Russian Orthodox Church, again imposes the division of children on religious grounds when studying spiritual and moral subjects,” Interfax quotes M. Murtazin’s interview with the Muslim magazine Islam Minbare.

According to the rector of the MIU, at a meeting of the working group at the Russian Academy of Education, where issues of studying religion in school were discussed, the opinion of the Council of Muftis was also supported by Jews, Catholics and Protestants.

M. Murtazin emphasized that the position of the Council of Muftis of Russia on this issue remains “unchanged”: in a state school a subject should be studied “that tells about all the traditional religions of the peoples of Russia, and not just about one, even the most numerous.”

Let us remember that Muslims have previously opposed the inclusion of Orthodox subjects in the school curriculum.
