October 2008. Results of the month

In October 2008, at least 19 people were injured in racist and neo-Nazi attacks, mostly by Nazi skinheads, of whom four were killed. Formally, this is much less than the same period in 2007 (then at least 103 people suffered, 6 of whom died). But firstly, on October 20, 2007, a neo-Nazi raid was carried out, as a result of which about 30 people were injured, and secondly, it is quite obvious that we do not receive information about incidents. on August 19, 2008 statement Thus, after V. Matvienko's that there were no hate crimes in the city, not a single racist incident was recorded in the city.

In October, attacks were recorded in 4 regions of the country - Moscow, Voronezh, Irkutsk, and Nizhny Novgorod.

In total, since the beginning of the year, at least 80 people have died and at least 312 people have been injured in 39 regions of Russia (for the same period in 2007, 71 people died and at least 539 people were injured).

In October 2008, 2008, at least 5 sentences related to racist violence or the threat of its use were passed against 15 people - in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Samara and Arkhangelsk regions. Moreover, in the last two cases, for the first time in the judicial practice known to us, Art. 119 (threat to kill), which took into account the motive of hatred.

In total, since the beginning of 2008, we have been aware of 23 convictions related to racist violence, resulting in the conviction of 77 people, 19 of whom received suspended sentences.

The persecution of racist propaganda is not reduced either. In October 2008, at least 6 guilty verdicts were issued against 8 people (in St. Petersburg, Barnaul, Novosibirsk, Novgorod, Astrakhan and Chelyabinsk regions).

Since the beginning of 2008, 37 sentences against 49 people have been handed down for xenophobic propaganda, 15 of which were given suspended sentences without any additional sanctions.
