On December 21, residents of the Moskovsky district of St. Petersburg held a rally against the construction of a skyscraper near the Chesme ensemble, which includes a church in honor of John the Baptist, a palace and a cemetery. The protesters are convinced that the 125-meter building will spoil the view of the architectural monument of the XVIII century.
The legislature rejected an amendment banning the construction of a monument in the protected zone.
The rally participants adopted a resolution demanding to stop building and return the status of a protected zone to the Chesme ensemble. Residents of the Moskovsky district invited the city authorities to come and discuss with the townspeople a new town-planning project.
Recall that high-rise construction near the Novodevichy Convent in St. Petersburg caused protests from its inhabitants.
