Seminar "Legal protection and prospects for the integration of displaced populations in the North Caucasus"

April 22-23, 2009 Sochi hosted a seminar-meeting of leaders and observers of the media of the Southern Federal District "Legal protection and prospects for the integration of displaced population in the North Caucasus." The seminar was organized by the Russian Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the Russian Federation and the Alliance of Regional Press Leaders (ARS-Press).

The seminar was attended by representatives of the UNHCR in the Russian Federation (Moscow and North Caucasian offices), the Federal Migration Service of Russia (the central office and the Federal Migration Service for Sochi), the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation, the Office of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, the SOVA Center, more 30 journalists from the regions of the Southern Federal District.

During the seminar, topical issues related to the problems of asylum seekers, temporarily displaced persons were discussed. The speakers representatives of the departments briefed the journalists on the current situation related to the legal status of migrants, legislative activities in the field of migration legislation. In his speech, the representative of the SOVA Center touched upon the problems of anti-migrant propaganda in the Russian mass media and hate speech in general.
