Attack in Kirov

In the early summer of 2009 (between May 15 and June 2009) in Kirov, Vasily Varankin ("Paralysis"), who was sitting in the courtyard in the company of his acquaintances, some of whom the employees of Center "E" call Nazi skinheads, beat his neighbor Andrey Kopanev.

The attacker called Kopanev, who was drunk at that moment, and began to beat him, and one of Varankin's acquaintances filmed the beating on a mobile phone camera.

Varankin stated that he hit Kopanev only because he began to insult his dead brother. However, details appear in the case of the attack on the neighbor, which indicate the likelihood of a hate motive and that the beating of Kopanev was an action.

Kopanev points out that Varankin insulted him during the beating, including calling him an "alcoholic", and believes that Varankin began to beat him because he did not like that Kopanev was drunk.

Employees of the Center for Combating Extremism of the Internal Affairs Directorate for the Kirov Region became interested in the young man who filmed the beating. With the help of video recording, the investigators identified the victim and asked him to write a statement. When asked why he did not do this earlier, Kopanev told the police: "I was afraid that after writing the statement, Varankin would kill me altogether . "

On February 9, 2010, the Kirov Magistrate's Court passed a guilty verdict on Varankin under paragraph "a" of Part 2 of Art. 116 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (beating out of hooligan motives) and sentenced him to 1 year of imprisonment on probation with a probationary period of 1.5 years.
