The President of Buryatia, Vyacheslav Nagovitsyn, turned to Patriarch Kirill with a request to create an Orthodox diocese in the republic. Now Buryatia is part of the Chita-Transbaikal diocese with a department in Chita.
The information about Nagovitsin's letter to the primate of the Russian Orthodox Church was distributed by the republican edition "Inform Polis". By decision of the head of Buryatia, a similar letter was sent to the Chita-Transbaikal diocese, so that the ruling bishop, Bishop Evstafiy, also put his visa.
The initiative of the President of Buryatia to create a separate diocese was supported by a member of the commission of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation on interethnic relations and freedom of conscience Maxim Shevchenko. He noted that the heads of the regions "not only have to, but are obliged" to resolve religious issues as well.
