Anti-extremist statistics of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for January-April 2009

We publish statistics from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia on "extremist crimes" for January-April 2009. It is not entirely clear which cases under which "anti-extremist" articles of the Criminal Code are included in this information, however, as the Ministry of Internal Affairs clarified, it does not include crimes related to terrorism and the organization of illegal armed groups.

In January-April 2009, investigations of 113 out of these cases were completed , 107 of which have already been submitted to court. 12 cases were suspended for various reasons.

The vast majority of these cases do not appear to involve violence. However, already in the first four months of 2009, a whole series of murders and infliction of grievous bodily harm was qualified as racist. In particular, in the first four months of 2009, 5 people were officially registered in Russia (however, there is a clear error in the statistics, because when broken down by region, only 3 people were killed (in Moscow, Moscow and Orenburg regions)) and 13 people who received serious bodily injuries (11 people in the Sverdlovsk region and one each in Moscow and the Novgorod region).

In total, 115 people were accused and suspected in "cases of an extremist orientation" in the first 4 months.

Geographic distribution of "extremist cases"

• Moscow: 13 cases were registered in the first four months of 2009 and 26 cases were pending at the beginning of the year. During the first four months of 2009, 9 of these cases have already been investigated and taken to court.

• Petersburg and Leningrad region: 7 and 14 cases respectively.

• Belgorod region: 3 and 4 cases respectively. 4 of these cases went to court.

• Vladimir region: 2 and 4 cases respectively. 2 of these cases went to trial.

• Voronezh region - 0 and 1 case, respectively, this case has already been brought to court.

• Kaluga Region: 2 and 2 cases, respectively, 1 case referred to court.

• Kostroma region: 2 and 3 cases respectively. 2 cases have been investigated, including one of them has already been brought to court.
