On August 27, 2009, a jury of the City Court of St. Petersburg, by a majority vote, found 22-year-old Vladimir Sosnikhin, accused of the murder of student Denis Edzauskis, guilty under Part 2 of Art. 213 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (hooliganism committed with the use of weapons, motivated by hatred and hostility towards any social group, by a group of persons by prior agreement), clause "and" part 2 of article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (murder committed from hooligan motives). Sosnikhin was found guilty by 7 jurors out of 12.

"According to the jury's verdict, Sosnikhin does not deserve leniency on the fact of committing hooliganism, and on the fact of committing a murder, he is recognized as deserving of leniency ," the prosecutor's office said in a statement.

V. Sosnikhin denied his guilt, stating that it was not he who had stabbed the student to death. However, this statement was refuted by the testimony of witnesses.

The criminal case against other accomplices of the attack Trishkin, Krasnoselsky, Reusov and Skamin has been separated into a separate proceeding. They are charged only with Article 213 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The trial is underway in the Moscow Federal Court of St. Petersburg.
