Tatars as a social group

On October 8, 2009, at the ongoing trial in Kazan in the case of Irek Murtazin, the former press secretary of the President of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev, Judge Alexei Kochemasov called the Tatars a social group.

Recall, among other things, Murtazin is charged under paragraph "a" part 2, article 282 (inciting social hatred with the threat of violence, using the media) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. At the same time, according to the prosecution, the authorities of Tatarstan are a social group.

The mayor of Kazan, Ilsur Metshin, was summoned to court, and when Murtazin asked what social group he belongs to, he hesitated and could not give an answer. The judge reproached Murtazin for the allegedly poorly worded question and, apparently wanting to help Metshin, said the following words: “Well, why? You know very well that he can belong to the Tatar social group. so on . "
