The European Court asked the Russian government to ensure the implementation of the right to expression of the organizers of the exhibition “Beware of Religion!”

On January 18, it became known that the European Court of Human Rights addressed the Russian government asking whether the right to expression of the organizers of the exhibition “Beware of Religion!” was ensured. Let us recall that in 2005, the court found Y. Samodurov and L. Vasilovskaya guilty of inciting religious hatred.

The ECHR invites Russia to provide answers by April 13.

The Strasbourg court raised the question of whether the applicants were accused of organizing the exhibition “Beware of Religion!” is compatible with the right to free expression, which is protected by Article 10 of the Human Rights Convention, as well as what provisions of Russian legislation “protect the religion and religious feelings of citizens from the expression of an opinion that is presented as an artistic statement.”

Yu. Samodurov is also accused in the case of organizing the exhibition “Forbidden Art - 2006”.
