The suspects in the murder of Markelov and Baburova added a motive of hatred to the charge

On February 24, 2010, it became known that Nikita Tikhonov and Evgenia Khasis, defendants in the case of the murder of Stanislav Markelov, were charged under paragraph “l” of Part 2 of Art. 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (murder committed by a group of persons motivated by ideological hatred). Let us recall that in November 2009, N. Tikhonov and E. Khasis, suspected of murdering a lawyer and a journalist, were charged under art. “a”, “g” part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (murder committed by a group of persons) and Article 222 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (illegal trafficking in weapons).

According to the leader of the Russian Verdict, Alexei Baranovsky, the day before Tikhonov asked investigators to combine the murder cases of Stanislav Markelov and anti-fascist Alexander Ryukhin into one trial. In the second case, Tikhonov was identified as one of the accomplices and was put on the federal wanted list. Investigators refused to combine the cases of the murder of a lawyer and an anti-fascist.

On November 10, 2010, two witnesses identified Tikhonov at a confrontation. “One witness was on Prechistenka, near the scene of the murder, the second went into the Kropotkinskaya metro station, where the criminal fled. As it turned out, both saw the hiding killer. At the confrontation, witnesses told investigators that they recognized the accused by his face and eyes.” Nikita Tikhonov's defense doubts the conclusions of the witnesses.

At the request of the investigation, on April 13 and 14, 2010, the Basmanny District Court of Moscow extended the period of detention of Tikhonov and Khasis.
