Seminar "Countering extremism and individual rights" in Samara

The SOVA Center together with the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Samara Region held a seminar on March 16 on problems arising in anti-extremist law enforcement.

The seminar concerned not only the Samara region. It was also attended by the Commissioners for Human Rights of Tatarstan, Mordovia, the Penza Region and the Perm Territory.

The seminar was attended by representatives of the authorities of the Samara region: the prosecutor's office, the center for combating extremism, the Investigative Committee, customs, the department of the Ministry of Justice, the department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in transport, Roskomnadzor, the administration of Samara.

Representatives of Samara University, the "House of Friendship of Peoples", the Public Chamber of the region, the Youth Human Rights Movement, ethnic organizations of the region, and Jehovah's Witnesses also took part in the seminar.

Keynote presentations were presented by the SOVA Center and the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Samara Region, with the second report based on a survey of law enforcement and NGO representatives about the problem of anti-extremism.

The discussion at the seminar concerned, first of all, the most controversial aspects of anti-extremist law enforcement, such as the use of expertise, restrictions on the Internet, the impact of anti-extremism on freedom of conscience and civil liberties in general.

The recommendations made at the seminar will be finalized and used in further discussions of the Commissioners of the Volga Federal District.
