Far-right activists sentenced in St. Petersburg

On April 6, 2010, the St. Petersburg City Court sentenced members of a far-right group accused of attacks on foreigners in 2007.

In total, 11 people were involved in the case (Pavel Gogolitsyn, a student at the St. Petersburg State College of Physical Education, Sports, Economics and Technology, Dmitry Antipov, a student at Vocational School No. 29, Alexander Arbatsky, Andrey Barkov and Evgeniy Konstantinov, 2nd year students at the St. Petersburg State Agrarian University , Sergey Vasiliev, mechanic at Terma JSC, Andrey Kovalenko, loader at Interstroy LLC, Egor Miroshnikov, student at the Electrical Mechanical Engineering Professional Lyceum No. 2, Vasily Smirnov, 2nd year student at the Institute of Theology and Philosophy, Philip Tarzhimanov, 3rd year student at the St. Petersburg Economics Institute -Technological College of Nutrition and Vitaly Tsarenko, 2nd year student at the St. Petersburg Construction and Industrial Lyceum).

The accused were charged with clause "zh, l" part 2 of article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (murder committed by a group of persons motivated by national hatred), part 3 of article 30, clause "a,zh,l" part 2 of article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (attempted murder of two or more persons committed by a group of persons motivated by national hatred), paragraph "a" part 2 of article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (attempted murder , murder, inciting hatred and enmity).

The court sentenced Gogolitsyn and Antipov to 16 and 9 years of imprisonment, respectively, to be served in a maximum security colony. Barkov, Konstantinov, Arbatsky and Smirnov were sentenced to suspended prison terms of 3.5 to 5 years; the remaining five were released from punishment “due to the expiration of the statute of limitations.”

Nine people were released from custody in the courtroom.

The trial was held with the participation of jurors, who returned a guilty verdict on March 11.

Let us remind you that among the crimes incriminated against the defendant are the following. An attack on a group of Roma women on February 4, 2007 on the platform of the Vyborgskaya metro station, as a result of which one of the victims almost died. An attack on a Cameroonian citizen at the Politekhnicheskaya metro station, committed on the same day. Attack on a man of Caucasian appearance in the city of Pushkin on February 16, 2007. An attack on two people of Asian appearance, which resulted in one death, also committed on February 16 in Pushkin.

On February 19, 2011, Dmitry Antipov hanged himself in the Velsk prison in the Arkhangelsk region.
