On December 14, 2010, an open letter from the Council of Muftis of Russia to President Dmitry Medvedev, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin was published.
The authors complain that "the provision of land plots to Muslim religious organizations for the construction of mosques in Moscow faces serious obstacles caused by the activities of individual informal public organizations calling on city residents to oppose the construction of mosques in the capital of multi-confessional and multi-ethnic Russia . "
The Council of Muftis recalls that this situation impedes the exercise of the constitutional right to profess one's religion.
The authors of the letter ask the leadership of the country and the city to "provide the necessary amount of land for the construction of mosques."
On December 16, V. Putin, answering questions from viewers live, promised that a mosque in Moscow would be built.
