On February 22, 2011, the Federal Penitentiary Service signed a cooperation agreement with the Russian Orthodox Church.
Under the terms of the agreement, the FSIN undertakes to facilitate the construction of Orthodox churches, allocate premises for prayer rooms, and support the distribution of religious literature and religious items in prisons and pre-trial detention centers.
Representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church must perform divine services, provide charitable assistance to prisoners, and participate in educational work.
The contract was concluded until 2015.
