February 24, 2011 at the State Duma hosted a round table on the draft law "On Education in the Russian Federation" and discussion draft state educational standard.
Rector of the Russian Orthodox Church, who participated in the round table University Hegumen Peter (Eremeev) called on the participants in the discussion to “overcome discrimination of universities on religious grounds.
He noted that the ban on certifying diplomas with official seals “restricts opportunities of religious universities and their graduates”.
“ With the obvious absurdity of the fact that a state diploma, having state symbols, it was proposed to certify religious universities with a seal with religious symbols, they are trying to convince us that this corresponds to the secular nature of the state and education. We urge legislators pay attention to this problem ,” the abbot said.
In his opinion, “believing youth is outraged that they are referred to second-class citizens."
