On April 1, 2011, Patriarch Kirill addressed the rector of Moscow State University with a request to support the construction initiative on the territory university complex on the Sparrow Hills church in honor of St. Kirill and Methodius.
The patriarch is convinced that " the construction a new temple-chapel on the territory of the university complex on Vorobyovykh mountains will undoubtedly contribute to the solution of many important issues related to the patriotic and spiritual and moral education of the Russian youth ."
According to him, with the initiative to build the temple on January 25, teachers turned to him, employees and students of Moscow State University, and in February 2011 employees and students Faculty of Law expressed a similar desire in writing.
In response to the proposal of the patriarch journalist Alexander Nikonov, chairman of the Atheistic Society of Moscow, said that such construction is unacceptable, since " construction temples at universities rejects Russia from progress .
“ Universities are a bunch of everything scientific and it is impossible to dilute it with terrible barbarism. Note that the most developed and rich countries of the world are atheistic ,” he stressed, probably talking about secularity.
