Moscow State University began collecting signatures against the construction of a temple on Vorobyovy Gory
On April 11, 2011, an open letter from teachers, graduates and students of Moscow University (MSU), addressed to the rector and directed against the construction of a new Orthodox church on the territory of the university complex, was published on the RuNet.
On April 12, the letter was signed by more than a hundred people. The collection of signatures continues.
The signatories of the letter believe that “ a situation in which the University would give such a clear preference to one particular denomination can be regarded as paradoxical and contrary to the very spirit of university education .”
The open letter emphasizes that “ a situation in which church authorities are trying to infiltrate the structure of a secular university discredits both civil legal institutions and the Orthodox faith ,” since “ issues of any religion, including Orthodoxy, are deeply personal for many. ” .
The authors of the letter remind that the Church in Russia is separated from the state and a secular university “ should not become an arena for religious agitation ,” that Moscow State University “ by virtue of its name should give its students the broadest possible, pluralistic view of the world around them .”
