A deputy of the City Duma spoke out against the construction of Orthodox churches in Yekaterinburg and their financing from budget funds

On May 18, 2011 it became known that the initiative construction in Yekaterinburg 300 temples within walking distance, with which appealed to the city administration representatives of Yekaterinburg diocese, provoked public outcry.

In particular, the deputy of the City Duma Leonid Volkov stated that “the city needs a maximum of 5-10 new churches in remote neighborhoods.” "I will very grateful,” he said, “if with the help of the diocese we can identify 300 free sites. But what exactly will be built on them must be determined the public”, because “there is not enough land in the city even for playgrounds and parking lots.

In addition, L. Volkov recalls that the cost of maintaining churches, probably, will be carried out at the expense of the city budget, as happened with the Church of the Temple-on-the-Blood.

Recall that in April 2010, residents of the city opposed construction of the Catherine's Church on Labor Square. The protest took participation of the head of the city administration, the deputy of the regional duma and the dean of the history department USU.
