Imam shot dead in Yaroslavl
On the evening of November 8, 2011, a second man was shot dead in Yaroslavl Imam of the local Cathedral Mosque. The body was found in the entrance of a residential building in Dzerzhinsky district of Yaroslavl. The killer fired several shots, one of them to the head.
A criminal case has been initiated.
On November 14, 2011, Ruslan Gereev, an expert on religious and political Islam at the Center for Islamic Studies of the North Caucasus, stated that "the investigation, having voiced versions of the murder of the imam on the basis of extremism, did not must rule out the participation of skinheads". Previously the imam repeatedly received threats against him from neo-Nazis from Yaroslavl and always urged the urban ummah of Muslims to exercise caution in reactions to xenophobic attacks by local ultra-radicals.
