Vladimir Lukin saves Russian Protestants from the consequences of preventive measures to combat extremism in Bashkortostan

January 30, 2012 it became known that on demand Prosecutor's Office revoked the letter of the Minister of Education of the Republic of Bashkortostan Artur Surin to his subordinates, in which Protestant organizations were brought into as an example of "foreign religious destructive organizations.

Prosecutor's check of Artur Surin's actions was carried out according to the statement of the commissioner for human rights Vladimir Lukin, sent January 19, 2011 to the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation.

The audit showed that on October 25, 2011 heads of educational authorities and educational institutions of Bashkortostan Artur Surin sent a letter “noting that the security threat states represent foreign religious organizations of destructive persuasion, whose activities are aimed at the destruction of social, family ties and values, national traditions, culture, refusal to perform civil responsibilities, etc.”

This letter was created as part of the "preventive measures to counter extremist activity” and “motivated by the fulfillment of requirements” federal law "On counteracting extremist activity".

The ministry's letter included a list religious organizations in question. Among them are evangelical Christians (Pentecostals), evangelical Baptist Christians, Seventh Day Adventists.

The prosecutor's office ruled that " the said religious organizations are officially registered in Russia and carry out their activities on its territory in accordance with Russian law”, and “the named list religious organizations in the context of the letter may serve as a basis for possible interpretation to classify them as organizations whose activities encroaches on the personality and rights of citizens, the security of the state.
