I now work a lot with photographs from the early twentieth century. I’ve started one thing: I want to find faces for the characters in the novel I’m working on. Actually, Sergei Larenkov is involved in the selection, and I assist. With great pleasure - I told you how much I love old photos.
I come to the second-hand bookstore, cover myself with boxes filled with cards of long-dead people in shirtfronts, collars, bowlers, caps, and hats with feathers. Finding a character's face is quite a difficult thing. Sometimes you look, look: he, not him? It looks similar, but something is wrong...
These are all candidates. Each is similar, but something is a little different .
I’ve already found two and I’m very happy.
Although the right one is still in question
Immediately there was a feeling that my characters really existed. Although in fact there were people about whom I know nothing, and all that was left of them was a yellowed card.
I wonder who sells photographs from family albums to the store? Probably some old woman dies, after her they get rid of various rubbish, all sorts of useless and uninteresting kitsakes. And some indifferent person scrapes up faces from someone else’s past and hands them over to the second-hand bookseller for 100 rubles each.
But okay, I didn’t want to talk about sad things.
Sometimes I come across photographs that I look at for a long time, because I can’t understand – what is captured on them?
A couple of days ago I bought a front-line photograph dated June 1917. I think: why are half the people in their underwear and underpants?
I would never have realized it if there had not been an inscription on the back side.
Well, guess who all these people are? I am sure that among the members of the Noble Assembly there are sharper minds than mine.
The first one to guess will get an autograph book (I already know which one).
THREE HOURS LATER
Alas for me! The first commentator, exactly a minute after the sign, scored a goal. Yes. On the back it says: “In memory of our football team.” It's the seventeenth year, the country is collapsing, and they, you know, are playing football...
Madam winner, send me the postal address in a personal message. Get a book about a military football team.
And by the way, here's what. I see that some people posted photos from family albums in the comments. Maybe you can help Sergei Larenkov and me?
The following types are needed:
- An ugly young man with glasses (like the bottom left one in the “iconostasis”)
- A beautiful and sad young woman, similar to Vera Kholodnaya
- Difficult teenager
- A young woman with a broad peasant face
- Lying Red Army soldier in a group photo
The faces should be like they “don’t wear” now - from another time.
