The SOVA Center held a seminar on law enforcement in the field of hate crimes

On March 13, 2012, in the office of the Memorial Society in Moscow, the Civic Assistance Committee held a seminar during which the director of the SOVA Center, Alexander Verkhovsky, outlined the concept of crimes motivated hatred, focusing on the experience of Russian and foreign legislation.

The event was held as part of a joint project of the SOVA Center and Committee "Civic Assistance" "Assistance to victims of violence on national soil”, carried out with the support of the German Foundation "Memory. Responsibility. Future".

In the first part of his speech, A. Verkhovsky, relying on the experience of Western countries, dwelled on the very concept of hate crimes in general and the emerging legal conflicts in this area. The second part was devoted to Russian legislation and the peculiarities of law enforcement in this area.

Then a discussion took place with the participation of the gathered lawyers, social workers, journalists, public activists. The seminar was led by Anastasia Denisova, project curator from Civic Assistance.
