An Orthodox priest recommended fighting modern art with tomatoes and rotten eggs

On May 28, 2012, it became known that the head of the Synodal Department for Interaction with Law Enforcement Agencies and the Armed Forces, Archpriest Dimitry Smirnov, answering questions from viewers on the Orthodox TV channel Soyuz, commented on recent cultural events that caused indignation among the Orthodox.

Speaking about the production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at the Musical Theater. Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko, the priest called for throwing rotten eggs and tomatoes at the actors: “I think that a troupe that will be constantly booed (you can, by the way, still use such an old method as tomatoes, and best of all eggs, just not so boiled, and with a tukhlinka, you can even buy a hundred and carry it) - this is effective. Then we ourselves will influence the theaters’ repertoire...”

Commenting on the methods of dealing with gallerist Marat Gelman , who irritates many Orthodox Christians, Fr. Dimitri stated that it is impossible to anathematize the gallery owner, because he is not a member of the Church.
