Another appeal of the Orthodox to the Patriarch - now with a call to punish Pussy Riot

On June 20, 2012, another appeal to Patriarch Kirill was published in connection with the situation around Pussy Riot.

The authors of this text dissociate themselves from the Orthodox Christians who signed the previous letter, who called on the Patriarch to intercede for the group members.

Referring to John Chrysostom, the new signatories justify the need to “obtain punishment from the authorities for Pussy Riot.” As the popular saying goes: “Don’t let others do it!”

In their opinion, those who call for pardon for the girls “poorly know the basics of Christian Teaching” , are “infected with the ideas of tolerance” and seek to “sow a schism within the Church.”

“If you act in accordance with their calls, this will mean that from now on all the enemies of the Church will be able to do whatever comes into their head with impunity! Insult believers, break into and desecrate our churches, chop down icons, draw blasphemous posters that are parodies of the Savior, etc. and so on. And all because it will be possible! It is possible, since we, the Orthodox, ourselves have publicly admitted that this can be done to us,” says the appeal (the authors’ spelling has been preserved - Ed.) .
