Northern Brotherhood ideologist convicted

On October 15, 2012, the Gagarinsky Court of Moscow sentenced one of the founders and leader of the Northern Brotherhood organization, Pyotr Khomyakov, to four years in prison in a general regime colony.

P. Khomyakov was accused under Part 1 of Art. 282.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (organization of an extremist community) and Part 4 of Art. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (fraud committed by an organized group or on an especially large scale).

When making its decision, the court took into account Khomyakov’s admission of guilt, did not find aggravating circumstances, but considered that “ the man should be held responsible, since he committed the crime in a sane state .” The prosecutor demanded that he be sentenced to six years in prison with a fine of 300 thousand rubles. The defense lawyer asked to take into account the advanced age of the accused, the presence of a progressive disease, assistance in solving the crime, and proposed that the court assign Khomyakov a suspended sentence.

The term of punishment is counted from the moment of Khomyakov’s arrest - September 27, 2011. The case was considered in a special judicial procedure. (see the SOVA Center’s certificate “Special procedure for trial ”).

The convict and his lawyers do not agree with the verdict and announced their intention to appeal the court's decision. Khomyakov stated that he had entered into a pre-trial agreement with the investigation, and called the Northern Brotherhood “ a group of half-destitute gopniks ” who “ conned him like a sucker .” “ People who had no potential hoped to receive political dividends. I don’t give up my ideals, but you have to fight for ideals competently, and this was a gopnik, perhaps even provocative company ,” Khomyakov said.

Let us recall that Khomyakov , together with Anton Mukhachev (Fly), Alexander Mironov (Sokol), Oleg Troshkin and “ other unidentified persons ” created the far-right group “Northern Brotherhood” (the organization was recognized as extremist in August 2012, the organization’s website was recognized as extremist in March 2008 year), and in October 2007 - the Internet project “Big Game. Break the System" (the project was recognized as extremist in January 2010). In addition, Khomyakov, using his official position - the position of deputy head of the geoecological survey department of Spetsmetroproekt LLC, committed the theft of the organization's funds in the amount of more than 3 million rubles.

A. Mukhachev and O. Troshkin have already been convicted.

In September 2011, Khomyakov was arrested by the Russian FSB.
