Ivan Moseev appealed to the European Court of Human Rights

The leader of the Association of Pomors of the Arkhangelsk Region, Ivan Moseev, appealed his sentence to the ECHR.

On November 21, 2013, it became known that the leader of the Association of Pomors of the Arkhangelsk Region, Ivan Moseev, sentenced by the Oktyabrsky District Court of Arkhangelsk under Part 1 of Art. 282 of the Criminal Code (incitement of hatred or enmity, as well as humiliation of human dignity) to a fine, filed a complaint against the sentence imposed on him to the European Court of Human Rights.

According to Moseev, the Russian court violated Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which guarantees a fair trial.

Let us remind you that Moseev was accused of leaving a comment on the website of the news agency “Echo of the North” under the nickname “Pomors”, insulting ethnic Russians. From our point of view, the statement left on the Echo of the North website, which served as the basis for initiating a criminal case, can be classified as hate speech, but it did not pose a public danger and did not provide grounds for criminal prosecution.

Let us also recall that as a result of the sentence imposed on him “for extremism,” Moseev faced a large-scaleloss of rights . At the request of the prosecutor's office, he was dismissed from his position at the university and from the position of director of the Pomeranian Institute of Indigenous Peoples of the North. In addition, according to the Ministry of Justice, he was expelled from all Russian public organizations in which he was a member. And according to the recommendation of the Federal Security Service for the Arkhangelsk Region, he was included in the list of terrorists and extremists of Rosfinmonitoring, and now Russian banks refuse to open accounts for him.
