Temple arsonist convicted in Nizhny Novgorod

In Nizhny Novgorod, a court issued a guilty verdict in the case of attempted arson of an Orthodox church.

On February 22, 2014, the Nizhny Novgorod District Court sentenced Left Front activist Dmitry Kapelyush to two years of suspended imprisonment with a probationary period of one and a half years for attempting to set fire to the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow” on Nesterov Street in July 2013.

The court found him guilty under Part 2 of Art. 167 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (deliberate destruction of someone else’s property for hooligan reasons) and Part 3 of Art. 30 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (attempted crime).

On February 24, the coordinator of the “Left Front” in Nizhny Novgorod, Alexander Krasnov, clarified that the convicted person was no longer a member of the movement, because “I made a deal with the investigation.”

Let us remind you that two people were detained on suspicion of attempting to arson the temple. According to representatives of the Left Front, the second could be a provocateur of the Center for Countering Extremism.
