The ECHR protected the rights of members of the Church of Scientology in St. Petersburg

On October 2, 2014, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) ruled in the case on the registration of the Church of Scientology in St. Petersburg.

In the refusal of the Russian authorities to register the Church of Scientology as a local religious organization in St. Petersburg, the ECHR found a violation by the Russian authorities of Art. 9 (Freedom of thought, religion, conscience) and Art. 11 (freedom of assembly and association) of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

Recall the court made similar decisions regarding the registration of the Church of Scientology Moscow in 2007 and the Churches of Scientology in Surgut and Nizhnekamsk in 2009, however, problems with the registration of local religious organizations are not are running out.
