In St. Petersburg, Orthodox activists are trying to challenge in court the refusal to transfer St. Isaac's Cathedral to the Church

On March 28, 2016, it became known that Orthodox activists - representatives of the Foundation for the Revival of Christian Values ​​"Holy League of St. George" - filed a claim with the Smolninsky District Court against the Property Relations Committee of St. Petersburg. The subject of the claim is the transfer of St. Isaac's Cathedral to the Russian Orthodox Church.

The chairman of the foundation, Sergei Egorov, in a conversation with journalists, said that the reason for going to court was the absence on the government’s website of an official refusal to transfer St. Isaac’s Cathedral to the Church.

Let us recall that the St. Petersburg Metropolis turned to the authorities with a request to transfer St. Isaac's Cathedral to the Church in July 2015. The possibility of such a transfer caused widespread public outcry. In September 2015, the press secretary of the governor of St. Petersburg Georgy Poltavchenko, Andrei Kibitov, said that the city government had decided not to transfer St. Isaac's Cathedral to the ownership of the Russian Orthodox Church.
