© Bundesarchiv prisoners of Gerero. 1904The German authorities are going to make official apologies for Namibia for the genocide of the Gerero and Nama in 1904-1908, when this African country was a colony of the German Empire.
This was reported by Interfax with reference to the German magazine Der Spiegel .
In 1904, General Lotar von Trot was appointed commander in chief in the German South-West Africa, who ordered the universal destruction of the Gerero tribe raising the uprising. He later suppressed the uprising of the Nama tribe. The captured Gerero and Nama - mainly women and children - were kept in concentration camps, mortality in which reached 75%, brutal medical experiments were conducted over prisoners. As a result, according to modern estimates, more than 75 thousand Gerero and Nama died.
“We are working in a joint intergovernmental declaration that provides for the following stages: a joint discussion of historical events and the apology of Germany in front of Namibia,” said Savsan Shebli Foreign Ministry representative.
She added that a joint declaration with the Government of Namibia can serve as the basis for the parliamentary resolution, but emphasized that the apology of Germany would not assume any obligations or payments.
Earlier it became known that the deputy of the ruling party of justice and development, Metin Kyulunk, announced his intention to submit to the parliament a bill on the recognition of the genocide of the peoples of Gerero and Nama to Turkey. A week before, Bundestag adopted a resolution that recognizes the mass killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire by the genocide . Germany officially recognized its actions in South-West Africa by genocide in 2004.
