V. Legoyda spoke out in defense of the opera “Jesus Christ Superstar”

Head of the Synodal Department for Church Relations with society and the media Vladimir Legoyda defended the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" from the attacks of the Orthodox public, calling not to confuse the non-canonical with the blasphemous.  

November 1, 2016 head of the Synodal Department for relationship of the Church with society and the media, Vladimir Legoyda commented protests of the Orthodox community against the showing of the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar." He called to see the difference between non-canonical and blasphemous depiction of a shrine, as well as recalled that this opera " "led many to the church .

"The Church does not suppress creativity, blessing the artists who are inspired by gospel stories in his works ,” said V. Legoyda. According to him, "You can't forbid the artist to draw inspiration from the Holy Scriptures . Appeal to biblical subjects, he believes, “does not and cannot make artists evangelists or the holy fathers of the Church, through whose labors the church tradition and doctrine were created. At the same time, works of art based on biblical stories are us reflections of Christian culture .

"Between the blasphemous and non-canonical image of the shrine - the abyss, which is invisible only culturally short-sighted person ,” said V. Legoyda.

Recall that recently protests of the Orthodox, the screening of the opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" was canceled in Omsk. Residents of Tyumen also appealed to the governor of the region with a request to cancel production of this opera.
