The German Chancellor Angela Merkel was re-elected by the leader of the Christian Democratic Union, reports Reuters.

89.5% of the congress delegates, which takes place in Essen, voted for the candidacy of Merkel. According to RBC, in 2012 and in 2014 Merkel achieved more support. Two years ago, 96.7% of delegates voted for it, in 2012 - a record 97.9%.

The predecessors of Merkel as chairman of the CDU sought even more convincing indicators. In 1954, 1956 and 1958, Konrad Adenauer received 100% of the vote of delegates, and in 1990 - 98.5%.

Merkel has been leading the party for more than 16 years. Longer, the chairman was only Helmut Kohl - 25 years old.
